Serum with any visible hemolysis cannot be used because of the large amount of phosphate released from the erythrocytes. The specimen should be separated from the clot as soon as possible to prevent falsely elevated phosphate levels due to passage of phosphate from the erythrocytes into the serum.
The only acceptable anticoagulant is heparin.
